The challenge
As part of the wider works at B&M Hylton, an existing wall required full lateral restraint to allow adjoining works to be completed safely. The wall had to remain fully supported throughout the programme — with no movement, no damage to the host structure, and clear working access maintained for the trades around it.
Our Solution
4CM designed and installed a bespoke temporary support system to hold the wall in full lateral restraint for the duration of the works.
A double-layer 18mm plywood bracing panel was fixed to an engineered timber sub-frame against the wall face, distributing load evenly across the substrate. The panel was restrained by adjustable Acrow-type steel push-pull props, angled back to firm anchorage points and secured with proprietary brackets and plates. Props were spaced to suit the calculated lateral loading, bearing onto solid, level base plates with timber sleepers and spreaders to prevent localised over-stress on the slab. Each prop was tightened to firm engagement only — sufficient to maintain restraint without inducing additional load into the existing wall.
The system was installed and signed off by 4CM’s appointed Temporary Works Coordinator under the principles of BS 5975, with weekly inspections recorded for the duration of the works. On completion of the permanent works the system was safely struck and removed in a single shift, leaving no residual fixings or damage to the host structure.
Outcome
Zero recorded movement of the wall throughout the programme. Zero damage to the existing structure. Permanent works completed on time, with the temporary support struck and removed cleanly on handover — a safe, well-engineered solution delivered on time and within budget.
